Forum for Cities in Transition -- Inaugural Conference: 3-8 May 2010, Mitrovica

The inaugural annual conference of the Forum for Cities in Transition will take place in Mitrovica, from 3-8 May 2010.

In April 2009, at a conference held at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and where the Forum for Cities in Transition was established, the delegates from Mitrovica volunteered to host the first annual conference. They are living up to their promise.

The attending cities will be from the founding cities: Derry/Londonderry and Belfast (Northern Ireland); Nicosia (Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities); Kirkuk (Iraq), and of course the host city -- Mitrovicë (Serbian)/Kosovska Mitrovica.

Other cities that will send delegations are: Mostar (Bosnia Herzegovina); Haifa (Israel); and Kaduna (Nigeria).

This conference has all the promise of being a unique occasion -- cities and regions with special problems that they share in common gathering in one city of their own kind, to experience from the ground up how that city functions, deals with its special problems, and fosters co existence among divided and separate communities.

About the FCT logo

The logo for the Forum for Cities in Transition was based on the semi-circular arrangement of tables for the plenary sessions at the initial conference that took place April 14-16, 2008, at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. There is further inspiration from King Arthur's famed Round Table, with no head and everyone who sits there having equal status. In this design, the circle is presently half-complete, but with leaders of each city at their place, there will be collaborative work among Forum participants to realise a full circle.
